What is the "Discovery Area?"

Westlawn’s Discovery Area is an enriching, safe and stress free outdoor environment in which to learn. Students participate in engaging extensions of classroom curriculum which provide additional opportunities to achieve academically.  The Discovery Area promotes best practices in education by offering students real life experiences in which to explore and apply the FCPS Program of Studies. Students enjoy planting and harvesting the crops, digging for treasure in the special digging area, reading and telling stories in the story telling chair and climbing the “mountain”.

In addition, the Discovery Area fosters a partnership between students, parents, staff members, business partners, and the community. Throughout Fall 2022, we teamed up with several Scout troops and an Eagle Scout to refresh our Discovery Area and make it accessible and functional for years to come.
