First Friday Photos: January 2023
Greetings, Westlawn community members! We are here with a gallery of photos in honor of First Friday. In many areas, the term First Friday refers to any number of various public events, usually centered around the arts. We are adopting the term to refer to the visual art of photography, as well as to highlight our commitment to our schoolwide Portrait of a Graduate attribute of Creative and Critical Thinker. As you enjoy the images below, consider how each student:
- Engages in problem solving, inquiry, and design of innovative solutions to overcome obstacles to improve outcomes.
- Uses information in novel and creative ways to strengthen comprehension and deepen awareness.
- Demonstrates divergent and ingenious thought to enhance the design-build process.
- Expresses thought, ideas, and emotions meaningfully through the arts.
- Evaluates ideas and information sources for validity, relevance, and impact.
- Reasons through and weighs evidence to reach conclusions.
And, if you'd like to see more photos throughout the month, we encourage you to follow us on social media where we post regularly! You can follow us on Facebook or on Twitter. Leave us a comment there to tell us what you're enjoying!

Our book fair was a huge success during the first full week in December! Students loved shopping and were able to buy themselves some great reads to enjoy over winter break. Our parent volunteer support was also tremendous!
Students across the school learned about different winter cultural traditions. In music class with Ms. Pivetta, second grade students learned how to play dreidel.
Ms. Cochran's students also participated in The Grinch Challenge during the month of December. As a class, they recorded over 100 acts of kindness and spent each closing circle celebrating their classmates' generosity and love.
Students in bad, strings, and chorus put on three amazing performances for classmates, friends, and family members in mid-December. We were thrilled to have an in-person winter concert for the first time in years!
Ms. Kowalski's second grade class volunteered to help bag up the donated food items from the can drive. It was amazing to see the students stuff and lift the heavy bags!
First grade students all had the chance to participate in a station rotation activity and learn about different cultural traditions from around the world. They collected their materials in passports.
