First Friday Photos: June 2023
Greetings, Westlawn community members! We are here with a gallery of photos in honor of First Friday. In many areas, the term First Friday refers to any number of various public events, usually centered around the arts. We are adopting the term to refer to the visual art of photography, as well as to highlight our commitment to our schoolwide Portrait of a Graduate attribute of Creative and Critical Thinker. As you enjoy the images below, consider how each student:
- Engages in problem solving, inquiry, and design of innovative solutions to overcome obstacles to improve outcomes.
- Uses information in novel and creative ways to strengthen comprehension and deepen awareness.
- Demonstrates divergent and ingenious thought to enhance the design-build process.
- Expresses thought, ideas, and emotions meaningfully through the arts.
- Evaluates ideas and information sources for validity, relevance, and impact.
- Reasons through and weighs evidence to reach conclusions.

Kindergarteners count down the year with the letter of the day. Here, "H" is for "hats."
Sixth grade students visited Gettysburg, PA, to learn about the Civil War on location.
Baby chicks abounded in classrooms around the school.
Students at multiple grade levels completed math modeling units about designing inclusive playgrounds.
Some baby chicks were quite daring, and ended up on shoulders and heads!
Kindergarteners got to taste the results of their work--literally--when they sample lettuce grown in the Discovery Area.
To honor staff, Girl Scouts from Troop 55103 made lovely chalk messages and drawings during National Teacher Appreciation Week.
In the library, students became architects.
Fourth graders visited Jamestown and took on all manner of personas while wearing the gear of people from the past.
Student artwork was displayed at the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra's final performance of the season, and families and staff were in attendance.
Students celebrated their success from the annual Solo and Ensemble Festival.
To de-stress from testing, sixth graders practiced their UNO skills.
Third graders worked on clay projects in art.
Library chickens received attention from students who were eager to hold them and pet them at the end of library time.
First grade students practiced soccer skills with strong kicks across the gym.
Students in grades five build homemade instruments in music, and students in grade two had a chance to learn about their efforts.
Second grade students wrote questions and gathered real data from Westlawn staff as part of graphing units in math classes.
Fourth grade students learned how to use Flip to record academic presentations.
The salad bar continues to be wildly popular!
In kindergarten, "I" is for "ice pops" and, evidently, huge grins!
Fifth and sixth grade chorus students enjoyed an end-of-year chorus party with snacks and pizza.
Kindergarteners tried--sometimes successfully--to catch flying insects that were visiting the garden.
